Strengthening rural livelihoods and food security through improving village poultry production in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia - View Project
In July 2009, the International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC) of the KYEEMA Foundation was given a one-year grant by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) to continue project activities in Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania, and to set up a new program in Zambia for Newcastle disease (ND) control in village chickens. The project aims to increase village poultry production in project areas to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation.
The purpose of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the Governments of Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia to develop and implement efficient and sustainable ND control and village poultry extension programs to improve the welfare of rural communities.

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) Activity inNusa Tengara Timur, Indonesia: The TEBE Project for the Mutis-Timau Forest Complex - View project
The KYEEMA Foundation, with funding support from AusAID, has worked closely with twolocal NGOs, Yasan Peduli Sanlima (SANLIMA) and Yayasan Timor Membangun (YTM), todevelop a REDD activity concept that will enable communities to better manage the Mutis-Timau forest and materially benefit from REDD. The TEBE Project (‘Towards EnablingMitigation of Climate Change Through Promotion of Community-Based Economic Growth’) is based on the introduction of community forest management concessions to resolve forest tenure issues and enable communities to assess, and access, carbon market funding.

Reduction and Control of Newcastle Disease in Angola - View Project
The European Commission signed a Contract with KYEEMA Foundation in November 2008 to implement a three year program for the Control of Newcastle Disease in Angola. The program is working directly with the Angolan Veterinary Services Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and will be based in Lubango in the south of Angola. It will be working in five Provinces, namely Kunene, Huíla, Namibe, Benguela and Huambo.

AHEAD Mozambique View Project
With the aid of the $45, 550 USD AHEAD Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area Seed Grant, the International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC) will undertake the project “Improvement of village poultry production by communities in the Limpopo National Park Support Zone in Gaza Province, Mozambique”. The project aims to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation through the improvement of husbandry practices and disease control related to village chickens.

Train the Trainer Workshop and Follow-up Activities for Full-time Village Chicken Keeping Workers, Solomon Islands - View Project
In April 2006, the IRPC was granted funds by GRM International to undertake a project in the Solomon Islands to conduct Train the Trainer' Workshops and Follow-up Activities for Full-time Village Chicken Keeping Workers. The project comprised a two-week training workshop specifically for up to fifteen prospective trainers in village chicken keeping; consolidation of facilities and personnel at existing farmer schools and assist to establish proposed new farmer schools, and importation of a small number of crucially needed chicken and duckling breeds to commence establishment of a regional network of poultry breeding stations.

Improvement of village chicken production by Junior Farmers and People living with HIV in selected villages in Manica and Sofala provinces, Mozambique - View Project
In January 2005 the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) provided funding to the International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC) to pilot improved management of village chickens and vaccination against Newcastle disease of the chicken flocks of People living with HIV/AIDS, to help mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS on food security and nutrition in selected areas of Manica and Sofala Provinces in Mozambique. The IRPC, a subsidiary entity within the KYEEMA Foundation, is working within the framework of Home Based Care systems run by the local NGOs ASVIMO and Kubatsirana, who are undertaking feeding programs and other food security programs for selected communities in these Provinces.

Reduction of cyanide in Cassava, to reduce cyanide toxicity (Konzo) in children and women of child-bearing age View Project
This project is following on from excellent research work undertaken by the Australian National University (ANU) with support from both ACIAR and AusAID over the past eight years. Initial research work was to establish a reliable and cheap test for cyanide levels in cassava, so that cassava toxicity could be detected early in drought years and measures taken to stop cases of konzo, a paralysis that affects particularly children and and women of child bearing age. Development of this test was achieved, but the next step (this project) has been designed to test the use of very simple preparatory techniques for cassava before cooking, to reduce cyanide levels by two thirds of their levels in cassava flour.

Malawi Newcastle Disease Control Consolidation Project- View Project
The Newcastle Disease Control Consolidation Project is a follow-on from the Southern Africa Newcastle Disease (ND) Control Project (SANDCP) which covers Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania. In Malawi SANDCP focussed primarily on the introduction and testing of I-2 ND vaccine and ensuring sustainability of distribution activities of the vaccine. Interim funding for one year from February 2006 to June 2009 is providing an opportunity to continue the good work done under SANDCP with the department of Animal Health and Livestock Production and to develop a more comprehensive approach in Malawi in making vaccine production, and ensuring the sustainability of distribution activities.

Improvement of village chicken production in Chibuto District, Mozambique - View Project
In January 2005 the International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC) was invited by Corridor Sands Limited (CSL) mining company in Mozambique to facilitate the community-based management of Newcastle disease (ND) and other poultry husbandry practices. CSL is establishing a mine in the Chibuto district of Mozambique and as part of the mine establishment; several communities will be affected by the operations. CSL is committed to ensuring these communities will be better off as a result of the mining activities, and is funding priority community development activities, such as village chicken production, to help communities to build a better future.

Improvement of village poultry production by communities surrounding South Luangwa National Park, Zambia - View Project
This project focused on the sustainable control of ND in village poultry; improved village poultry husbandry and management strategies including marketing; and improved household welfare, including improved nutrition and food security as a means of reducing the need for communities surrounding South Luangwa National Park to hunt, eat and sell bushmeat.

Mama Mkubwa project, Tanzania View Project
The St. Alban’s Children’s Society in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania has set up the Mama Mkubwa program to look after orphaned and street children in the homes of women volunteers, as it was recognised that with the number of orphans increasing rapidly due to AIDS, building centres was never going to be a sustainable option for caring for orphans. Under the Mama Mkubwa program, children are cared for within families by the volunteer women. The Kyeema Foundation is helping these women to set up chicken raising enterprises in their backyards, so they can have an income to buy food for the children they are caring for.

HPAI Technical Adviser, Timor Leste (East Timor) - View Project
In December 2005, the IRPC subcontracting to GRM International BV of the Netherlands, provided an expert to assist the FAO in their role as a member of the National Task Force for Avian Influenza in Timor-Leste. The role of the Task Force was to prepare a Preparedness and Response Plan for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Although Timor-Leste is currently free from HPAI, the disease is endemic in most provinces of Indonesia.

In March 2005, The IRPC, subcontracting to GRM International BV of the Netherlands, provided an international Expert on Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) to work as a short term technical advisor to assist the FAO representative in their role in the decentralized team of the Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) in Lao PDR. The IRPC consultant was responsible for assisting the FAO Representative in the coordination and linkage of various financial, technical and material support to the AI Programme.

Village Poultry Trainer for Village Chicken Workshop in Mphanama and Strydkraal Districts, South Africa - View Project
In January 2005, an IRPC consultant shared experiences of poultry raising in rural communities with poultry group members from the JICA funded livestock project in Limpopo Province, South Africa. One of the livestock project components is the promotion of existing village chickens for rural household security and low levels of income generation. The consultant visited communities in Mphanama, Strydkraal and Manganeng districts and chaired a workshop to share poultry raising experiences from Mozambique, including Newcastle Disease control activities.

Junior Farmer Field Schools Pilot Project, Zimbabwe - View Project
The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), Catholic Relief Service and Bethany identified the Junior Farmer Field School (JFFS) concept as a potentially useful way to assist rural youth in HIV/AIDS programs. Under this program, ICRISAT has proposed using poultry as a model to develop farming/ entrepreneurial skills. The International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC) was invited to assist ICRISAT and partners to develop and test curriculum and training modules on extensive and/or semi-intensive poultry production, for use in both Farmer Field Schools and Junior Farmer Field Schools (the latter targeting youth involved in HIV/AIDS mitigation and prevention programs) in Zimbabwe. Due to the lack of reference material dealing with the improved production of indigenous poultry, the IRPC placed considerable emphasis on the preparation of a manual for JFFS facilitators.

Sponsorship of Students - View Project
The KYEEMA Foundation funded study for Matilde E. J. Nacuvaneque, a Mozambican woman from Nampula Province in the North, who achieved very good results at school, but had no way possible to ever be able to attend University without assistance. Matilde learnt skills that are helping her to promote Mozambique as a tourist destination, and hopefully in the future this will create more job opportunities for Mozambicans.
