Notes |
Newcastle disease is a serious problem for indigenous chickens reared in rural areas in Bangladesh. The small village flocks rarely receive conventional vaccines. Before undertaking extensive field tests with thermostable V4 vaccine, the authors conducted comparative laboratory trials. The tests used F strain vaccine by eye drop, Mukteswar vaccine by drinking water and V4HR vaccine on parboiled rice or ground wheat, in drinking water or by eye drop. All vaccinated birds developed antibody. On challenge protection was greater with the conventional vaccines (93-94%) than with HRV4 by drinking water or eye drop (86-88%) or on food (67-79%). It was concluded that V4HR vaccine could be useful in rural Bangladesh because of its thermostability and ease of application. |
