The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) is funding the Rural Poultry in Developing Countries information and networking service, which is updated regularly by staff working under the AusAID funded Southern Africa Newcastle Disease Control Project. This project is assisting the Governments of Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania to improve rural food security and improve livelihoods of the rural poor by working towards:
- Strengthening the capability of, and relationship between, stakeholders in order to successfully implement Newcastle Disease (ND) control programs in Mozambique, Tanzania and Malawi; and
- Achieving a decrease in chicken mortality rates caused by ND in project activities.
The KYEEMA Foundation’s primary source of funding is through a private company called GRM International, which is a consulting firm specialising in sustainable livelihoods development (www.grm.com.au). They have funded start-up costs for the Foundation as well as funding two of the development activities being supported by the Foundation (Mama Mkubwa project in Tanzania and Reduction of cyanide in Cassava to reduce cyanide toxicity [Konzo] in children and women of child-bearing age in Mozambique).
The Foundation has also received individual donations from Simon Gaylard and Stewart Routledge, who are funding the Mozambique scholarship recipient and have also provided additional funds for physiotherapy for women and children affected by konzo in Mozambique.
Through undertaking technical assistance jobs for international agencies such as ICRISAT and the Asian Development Bank, the Foundation has also raised money to assist in paying for other development activities.
